Army Stew or Budae Jigae (부대찌개) is perfect for the up coming winter season. The word “Budae” translates to army base, and “Jigae” means stew. This Korean-American influenced dish originated in 1950 during the Korean War.
This fusion dish consists of American ingredients such as spam, sausage, canned beans and American cheese and more. You can’t go wrong with this savory dish that also consist of Korean ingredients such as Kimchi. Korean hot pepper paste, ramen noodles, various mushrooms, and slices of rice cake. These are one of the primary ingredients to have to make this delicious Army stew.
This dish started to get popular in Korean restaurants and neighborhoods of college students making it a cultural icon all over Korea. This is the perfect food to gather with your friends or family being merry and drinking Korean soju as you burn the winter night away.
